I wanted to point out an opportunity to wrestle coming up.  The Southridge Mat Raid is an open tournament for our age group.  It's Sunday, December 15th in Huntingburg.  This is not a Reitz team meet and is not part of our schedule.  We will, however, have Reitz coaches present and ready to help your wrestler, should you choose to attend.  If you are interested, please do not wait to register.  They have a maximum registration and they usually hit it.

You'll register and pay at www.trackwrestling.com.  The easiest way to get there is by clicking this link: https://in.wrestlingtournaments.org/view.cfm?ID=71347 and selecting online registration.  YOU DO NOT NEED A PAID TRACKWRESTLING ACCOUNT TO REGISTER.  Be sure to select "Evansville Reitz" as your club.  Otherwise, the coaches won't know when your child is scheduled to wrestle.  If we don't have team singlets by then, pick one from our bag.  I'll have it at practice next week.

There are no weigh-ins at Southridge.  We will conduct a club weigh-in at the end of practice on 12/11 for Group 2 and 12/12 for Group 1.  You need to be registered for the tournament before you weigh in with us.  Last year we had several weigh in "just in case" and then didn't show up.  It caused confusion for the tournament officials.

Again, this is optional and not part of the Reitz season.  Let me know if you have questions.

We will begin wrestle offs December 17th.  This is intended for the entire team.  We will conduct these over a three day period, but I hope to finish them in 2 days.  I have been recording weights, but I don't have everyone.  I will not be able to place your wrestler in a bracket without a weight.  Please ensure you are at practice next week so I can get everyone weighed.  6th grade wrestlers do not need to weigh in with elementary, I will ask the middle school coaches to weigh you at your practice.

Wrestle-offs are how we determine who will be our varsity team.  This year, our league will have varsity team dual matches while the JV has a round robin style competition.  The setup allows all wrestlers to get the same amount of matches (theoretically) while showcasing each school’s best.  (I will include the weight classes from the SIEWC rules below.)  To determine our varsity team, your child will wrestle the other kids in their weight range, with the overall winner appointed to the varsity team.    These matches are very loosely seeded, as only the overall winner is placed on varsity.  These will be quick turnaround matches with little regard for rest.  If we know someone is a bit worn out we will try to accommodate, but we are on limited time.

We will TRY to keep everyone engaged between matches with drill and some live wrestling.  Please note, practice times are modified on those dates.  We may alter who is attending each night.  I will know more once I have weigh ins completed and brackets built.

See below for our team's challenge policy.

Challenge policy:

Wrestlers will have the opportunity to challenge for a varsity position throughout the year.  A challenge must be communicated to the coaching staff at a Sunday meet.  That will give us time to set up the match.  The rule will be:  You can challenge for the varsity position at, or one weight above, your weight class.  The challenger can only challenge once between each meet.  (i.e. – if you lose a challenge at a Tuesday practice, you cannot challenge the following night, you have to wait until after the next meet.)  There will be no challenges on the day of meets.  If a wrestler being challenged is not at practice because of an unexcused absence, the challenger automatically wins the varsity spot for the next meet.  (To excuse an absence, a parent must call before practice.)  You can only challenge at one weight class per week.  The elementary coaches retain full discretion on who represents our program in the varsity duals and can refuse to allow a wrestler to challenge.  Coaches can decide to alter the varsity line-up regardless of wrestle-off results.  If we decide a replacement is necessary or appropriate Coach Cassin will address that with the wrestler and his/her parents.  (This is a very rare occurrence!)
